Dermal Fillers are highly versatile products that result in fantastic results when used properly. There are many different types of fillers on the market that are categorized by what they contain. At Mississippi Medical Aesthetics, our physicians prefer the hyaluronic acid dermal fillers (Juvederm, Restylane) in the face. Radiesse is a different type of filler that we use to add volume to contour, correct, and beautify the features of the hands. Juvederm Voluma XC is used in the cheeks to add an instant and long-lasting lift.

HYALURONIC ACID FILLERS – Juvederm & Restylane

Our physicians prefer the hyaluronic acid dermal fillers for use in the face, especially in deep lines around the mouth (called nasolabial folds). Hyaluronic acid is a normal component of the skin therefore no allergy testing is necessary. Hyaluronic acid fillers can also be reversed by injecting an enzyme (hyaluronidase) into the area containing the filler to dissolve it. Most hyaluronic acid fillers last from 9 months to a year. The results of injecting the Dermal Fillers are immediate. Mississippi Medical Aesthetics charges by the syringe of filler used. If any is left over after the injection session is complete, the patient’s name is placed on the syringe and it is kept in our refrigerator for later use by the patient if so desired. The fillers can be stored in this way for up to 6 months.

What does the procedure involve…
The skin overlying the injection sites is prepped with hibiclens and alcohol. Our physicians use a numbing cream and a machine called a Zimmer to manage the pain of injection. The Zimmer blows very cold air onto the injection site. The sensation of cold and pain are carried on the same nerve fiber so the cold is basically running interference and the patient feels the cold instead of the pain of the injection. Once the filler is in place, the skin overlying the wrinkle is massaged to spread the filler out evenly. Small areas of bruising at the injection sites are common. The use of the Zimmer and its cold air help in this regard. Lips can be the most painful areas to inject with filler so Dr. Manning and Dr. Adams take extra precautions when augmenting them. They use a very potent topical anesthetic cream coupled with the Zimmer. This technique controls the pain of injection quite well. Some injectors use dental blocks to control the pain of injection and our physicians occasionally use them too. However, the numbness associated with dental blocks can last a long time, so our physicians believe the potent numbing cream coupled with the Zimmer is a better option.

Photographs are taken and the numbing cream is applied and left in place for 15 to 20 minutes. The lips are then prepped with hibiclens and alcohol. The augmentation is begun in the corner of the lip and worked toward the midline. The Zimmer is used for 30 to 45 seconds on the area before the injection begins.

What to expect after the procedure…
The lips swell after being injected so the initial cosmetic result is always a bit more than the final result will be after a few days. There may be some mild bruising following the injections because the lips are quite vascular (hence their red color). The use of the Zimmer during the injection and a cold pack following the injection help in this regard. Our physicians believe the best lip augmentations are subtle. Lips that have been overdone are not attractive and our physicians will do everything possible to make certain that does not happen. It is always possible to add a bit more at the 2 week follow up if so desired.

RADIESSE

Dr. Manning and Dr. Adams use the dermal filler Radiesse for the hands. It contains calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a water-based gel carrier. It is sometimes used in the face but we prefer to use it in the back of the hands to give a more youthful appearance. Radiesse is mixed with the local anesthetic lidocaine to control the pain of injection. There may be some mild swelling and bruising following the injections.

What is a dermal filler…
Radiesse dermal filler is setting a new standard for facial and hand contouring and augmentation. It immediately adds volume to safely contour, correct, and beautify facial and hand features. And it continues to work over time. It has patented microsphere technology that stimulates the body to produce new collagen for a soft, natural look that lasts.

How does a Radiesse dermal filler work…
Radiesse dermal filler is made of unique, patented, calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a water-based gel carrier. When injected into the skin, these microspheres initially perform as a filler – they immediately provide facial volume for a soft, natural look. The transformation is noticeable right away. Over time, your body will gradually absorb the gel carrier, but the very tiny, smooth microspheres remain.

Once injected, Radiesse dermal filler starts a process called neocollagenesis, or the creation of new collagen.

It stimulates collagen production in your own body and encourages collagen growth around the injection site. In many cases, results may last up to a year or more.

Is Radiesse dermal filler safe…
In years of rigorous clinical testing and use by physicians in hundreds of thousands of patients worldwide, RADIESSE dermal filler has been proven to be safe and effective. RADIESSE dermal filler is made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), a biocompatible substance that’s identical to what’s naturally found in the body. RADIESSE dermal filler does not contain any animal- or human-derived components and it has a minimal risk of allergic reaction. After injection, RADIESSE dermal filler will not migrate to other parts of the body. Over time, it degrades naturally into calcium and phosphate ions that are safely metabolized by the body’s own processes.

JUVEDERM VOLUMA XC

Sagging and loss of volume in the cheek area are major reasons we lose that youthful profile with age. How can you restore a more youthful, contoured profile? Mississippi Medical Aesthetics now offers an FDA-approved filler for deep injection in the cheek area. From the makers of the #1 family of dermal fillers, Juvederm VOLUMA XC was developed to add a subtle, instant lift to your cheeks which restores a more youthful, contoured profile.

What is Juvederm XC…
Juvederm VOLUMA XC is made of a naturally occurring, hydrating substance found in your skin know as Hyaluronic Acid (HA). Skin begins to lose structure and volume as we age because of decreasing levels of Hyaluronic Acid. This injectable gel is the first and only FDA-approved filler uniquely formulated to add volume to all 3 areas of the cheek: apex, apple and hollow.

What to expect after the procedure…
A numbing cream is placed on the skin to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. There is also a numbing agent in VOLUMA called Lidocaine.

VOLUMA is injected under the skin with a small needle and instantly adds a subtle lift to the cheek. Normal activities may be resumed 24 hours after treatment. Side effects, such as tenderness, swelling, redness and itching at the injection site are moderate and generally last 2-4 weeks.

How long will it last…
Juvederm VOLUMA XC is clinically proven to last up to 2 years with optimal treatment and may help you look up to 5 years younger.
